Program (Scientific and Social Program, Workshops, Committees and Business Meetings) (PDF)
The 32nd Annual Meeting of the Statistical Society of Canada (SSC) will be held at the Université de Montréal from Sunday May 30, to Wednesday June 2, 2004. It is jointly organized by the Centre de recherches mathématiques (CRM) and the Département de mathématiques et de statistique of the Université de Montréal. The Program Committee is chaired by Christian Genest (Université Laval); Local Arrangements are coordinated by Christian Léger (Université de Montréal).
More than 500 registrants are expected at this conference, which will bring together researchers and users of statistics and probability from academia, government, and industry. The meeting will feature three workshops, some 40 Invited Paper Sessions, and numerous Contributed Paper Sessions. See below for a detailed program, a description of the workshops, and detailed information concerning registration, accommodation, transportation, and submission of abstracts.
All conference activities (workshops and committee meetings included) will take place at the Université de Montréal, located on the north side of Mount Royal. Most of them will actually be held at the André-Aisenstadt and Claire-McNicoll buildings [map], which are easily accessible from the downtown conference hotels, either by subway (called Métro) or by bus. Special rates have also been negotiated with the university residences.
The banquet will take place Tuesday night, June 1, at the Chalet du Mont Royal, which affords a breathtaking view of the downtown district.

Transportation
Montréal is served by one major airport (Montréal-Trudeau). The airport bus will get you downtown for $12.50. A taxi from the airport to downtown or to the campus of the Université de Montréal will cost around $30. Public transportation is by far the cheapest way to get downtown: take city bus no 221 from Dorval Train Station to Métro Lionel-Groulx; cost: $2.50.
From downtown Montréal to the Université de Montréal campus, you can take a cab (about $15.00) or the Métro for $2.50 a ticket. Exit the Métro at the Université de Montréal Station (blue line). Then take the moving ramp to the campus, located at the top of the hill. For those who will stay in the conference hotels, it is recommended to get to the campus by Bus 165 or 535 (these buses ride on Guy street which turns into Côte-des-Neiges). By exiting at “Queen Mary Road” and “Côte-des-Neiges,” a nice five-minute walk will take you to campus. The building “Pavillon André-Aisenstadt” is located west of the main building “Pavillon Roger-Gaudry” (formerly called “Pavillon Principal”).
If you are driving, take the Décarie Expressway (Highway 15) and exit at “Chemin Queen Mary Road.” Travel east on “Chemin Queen Mary Road.” The campus entrance is at the corner of Decelles Street (one block east of “Chemin Côte-des-Neiges”). It will cost you $10/day to park your car on campus. Be aware that street parking is at a premium around campus.
Student Travel Awards for SSC 2004
The SSC is again awarding travel supplements for students attending the 2004 SSC meeting, May 30 – June 2, at the University of Montreal. These awards are funded by the SSC and its sections, including the Biostatistics, Business and Industrial Statistics, and Survey Methods Sections.
Any full-time student giving a poster or a talk in a Contributed or Invited Paper Session, or participating in a Case Study Session, is eligible. In the case of multiple authors, only one award will be given per presentation. A student who has received an SSC Travel Award within the last two years is not eligible this year. No more than two awards will be awarded per university department.
This award is to be used towards travel costs to the 2004 SSC conference, up to a maximum of $500.
To apply for the award, please send a cover letter, the title and abstract of your talk, and a short budget indicating the costs to be met by this award. Indicate the section (Biostatistics, Business and Industry, Survey Methods or General) to which your paper belongs. Have your supervisor send a statement (e-mail is acceptable) indicating that you are currently a full-time student.
Send the required information to Professor John Koval by March 15, 2004.
John Koval, The University of Western Ontario, Chair of the Student Awards Subcommittee
Job Fair
The annual Statistics and Biostatistics Job Fair will again be held in conjunction with the SSC Annual Meeting in Montréal, QC, May 30-June 2, 2004. This is an excellent opportunity for employers to secure wellqualified candidates for their positions: experienced Statisticians, Biostatisticians and graduating students. Many graduating students present the results of their research at the Annual Meeting and demonstrate their abilities by participating in the case studies data analyses. The Job Fair is also a fertile opportunity for job seekers. The process for participation in the 2004 Job Fair is outlined below. Please note that all CVs will be sent to all participating employers (statistics and biostatistics). For job seekersFor free advance registration, please send 10 hard copies (please staple!) of a curriculum vitae to Gary Sneddon at the address given below, to arrive by Friday, May 7, 2004. You may choose to include a cover letter. Please note that e-mail submissions will not be accepted.
The curriculum vitae will be sent in a one-time shipment to prospective interviewers. All curriculum vitaewhich arrive after that date will be delivered on-site during the course of the meeting. You do not have to attend the meeting to participate in the Job Fair. However, if you will not attend please contact Gary Sneddon so that interview slots can be re-allocated.
With the curriculum vitae, please specify whether you wish to apply for industrial/commercial or academic positions or both. Also, please specify your citizenship and immigration status. Please state whether you will be attending the meeting, so we can distribute interview slots appropriately.
On-site registration will cost $25 for each job seeker. On-site registrants should bring 10 copies (stapled) of a curriculum vitae for on-site distribution. While the organizers will do their best to ensure distribution to interviewers, some delays will be inevitable, especially since many interview slots will have been allocated.
Curriculum vitae may be submitted in either official language. Bilingual individuals may want to submit them in both languages for double coverage in English and French job binders.
Since each job seeker will receive an identification number, please include an e-mail address with your application.

Costs for on-site interviewing and the advance receipt of curriculum vitae: $250 for commercial groups, $100 for institutional groups. In fairness to all, employers are asked to not contact the job seekers until the meeting dates. Please contact Gary Sneddon at the address below for details. After the meeting, there will be a charge to receive copies of the curriculum vitae: 1/2 the cost of your group category ($125 and $50, respectively).
