Postdoctoral Research Fellow, Clustering Categorical Data & BIB Design

Postdoctoral Research Fellow
Clustering Categorical Data & BIB Design

Department of Mathematics & Statistics,
University of Guelph, Guelph, ON, Canada.

Funding source: NSERC – Collaborative Research and Development
Anticipated start date: Winter / Spring 2010
Duration: 1 year, renewable for at least 2 further years.
Supervisor: Dr Paul McNicholas
Salary range: $35,000 to $45,000 gross, depending on research experience.

An exciting opportunity exists for a Postdoctoral Research Fellow to join a vibrant research group in the Department of Mathematics & Statistics at the University of Guelph. The group, which is led by Dr Paul McNicholas, specializes in the development of novel clustering and classification methodologies.

Description: The work involves the development of novel model-based techniques for the clustering of incomplete categorical data, and studying the potential impact of the resulting clusterings on the balanced-incomplete-block designs that produced the data. This project is the result of ongoing collaboration between Dr McNicholas and an industrial partner, and so the successful candidate will gain experience working with an industrial partner.

Qualifications: A PhD in Statistics or a closely related field is required. Ideally, the candidate will have demonstrated research ability in at least one of the key areas – clustering and experimental design – and will be an experienced programmer. However, candidates with strong publication records outside of the key areas will also be considered. The ability to work within a collaborative research team is essential.

Application: To apply, send a curriculum vitae including contact information for three referees who can speak to your research abilities, a list of publications, and a statement outlining your research activities to date to Dr McNicholas at pmcnicho@uoguelph.ca. When listing publications, first list work accepted by, or submitted to, peer reviewed statistics journals, then list any other publications.

Applications will be considered from January 4, 2010 until the position is filled.

See www.uoguelph.ca/~pmcnicho for updates on this position.
