Case Studies 2007
The Case Studies in Data Analysis sessions will be held at the SSC Annual Meeting in St. John’s June 10-13, 2007. The sessions are intended for teams of graduate and senior undergraduate students working either with or without faculty mentors.
Teams have the option of presenting their results in an oral or poster presentation. For oral presentations, we can accommodate a maximum of 8 teams per case study, with slots filled on a first-come, first-served basis. The oral presentation sessions will begin with an introduction to the case study by a subject-matter expert, so the teams presenting their analyses will not have to repeat the background information. Poster presentation boards will be available at the meeting during the days that the case studies take place. To facilitate discussion among teams, with the data donor, and everyone else interested, all teams are invited to put up a display on these boards, including teams making an oral presentation.
If you want to participate, contact Georges Monette if you will be participating in Case Study 1 and Alison Gibbs if you will be participating in Case Study 2. We will need to know the list of names for your team, the university which you represent, and your choice of an oral or poster presentation. We will also need to know if you are giving any other papers at the meeting, to avoid scheduling conflicts. The deadline for contacting Georges or Alison is April 15, 2007.
How to contact us
You will doubtless have questions once you start working on the data. You can ask us; you don’t have to guess the answer! You can direct your questions to us and we will answer what we can and forward other questions to the data donors. We will put answers to frequently-asked questions on the web pages. You are free to submit questions in either English or French.

Case Study 1: Demographic Methods
Case Study 2: Growth of Atlantic Herring
Atlantic herring is a schooling species which inhabits and is fished commercially in the coastal waters of Newfoundland. Management measures for herring supply include: annual quotas, fishing seasons, and a minimum allowable fish size of 29 cm total length. When this minimum length was set in the 1970’s, it represented the mean length at which 50% of herring matured for the first time. Over the past decade, commercial fishers in some areas have encountered increased percentages of under-sized herring in their catch and contend that herring growth rates are slower and that herring are maturing at a smaller size. They have requested that fishery managers consider reducing the minimum allowable fish size. The data for this case study are measurements from biological samples taken annually (1970 to 2005) from the Newfoundland commercial herring fishery. The primary objectives of this case study are: (1) to determine if the growth and maturation rates of Atlantic herring in Newfoundland waters have changed from 1970 to 2005, and (2) to examine whether there are spatial differences in these changes.
